Up to three butane or propane cylinders, 47 kg between them, with no limit on any one bottle. Caravans and campervans only, and for the vehicle's own lighting, heating and cooking. Secured against the movement of the ship, kept away from heat, and shut off at the cylinder for the sailing.

Pet cabins and kennels on the Pont-Aven, £50 each way. Pets can't stay in the van on the Spain sailings.Paperwork: an EU pet passport or a GB Animal Health Certificate, a microchip, and a rabies vaccination at least 21 days old. A dog also needs a vet-administered tapeworm treatment 24 to 120 hours before it comes back into Great Britain. An Animal Health Certificate has to come from an official vet within ten days of travel, so it's booked well before the crossing is.

The same central Santander ramp, in the afternoon.

The same central Santander ramp as the Portsmouth boat, with the Picos an hour and a half inland. Arriving in the afternoon rather than at breakfast, so plan a short first leg.

The money

The cheaper ticket, paid for with a longer drive to the port.

This is the shortest sea time to Spain, and it costs a driving day at the British end to get it. The comparison worth making is against the Portsmouth boat rather than against the road.

Worked examples at August 2026 magnitudes, not quotes. Plymouth is the cheaper ticket and the longer drive for anyone east of Bristol, so price the fuel and the night before the port against the difference.

A different ship from the Portsmouth boat, and no winter service.

Roughly March to the start of November. There's no winter service on this route, so a trip either side of those months sails from Portsmouth instead.

It's a different ship from the two-night Portsmouth sailing: this route runs on the Pont-Aven, where Portsmouth to Santander runs on the Salamanca. Both are proper cruise ferries with restaurants and cabins, and the Pont-Aven adds a pool and a cinema. What you get here is an evening and a morning at sea rather than a full day in the middle.

No. The vehicle deck is sealed once the ship sails. Take what you need for the crossing up with you, including anything the fridge is keeping cold, because there's no going back down for it.
